1st Procyon Highland Guard's - Unit History
|
Officially the 1st Procyon Highland Guard was formed in
early 3031, however many of the unit’s founding members had a previous
services histories together. In 3022, some of these members began service
together in a Special Research LAM Company, known as the "Terran
Furies" in the AFFS. Two of the unit’s commanding officers would
come from this unit, they were Lt. Stephen McKennan and Lt. Michael
McCauley. The Terran Furies were assigned to the Davion/ Kurita border,
frequently raiding Kurita planets. In 3027, they were lured into a trap on
Dieron, but they managed to escape and capture the famed Black Widow
Company intact. This action and the subsequent negotiations led to a
unique respect between members of the two units. In truth this
relationship was also fostered by Lt. Stephen McKennan’s membership in
the Wolf Dragoon’s famed WolfNet. The following year, the Terran Furies
were expanded to regimental strength, under the command of Col. Lance
Faulker. The Terran Furies were given a clandestine mission and headed out
for a deep penetration raid on Kurita world of Irece. The main
objective of this raid was the famed LAM facilities. The Terran
Furies won the victory, though they were reduced to only an operational
ad-hoc battalion afterwards. Returning home, the Terran Furies intercept
radio messages regarding Wolf Dragoons’ challenge to fight Kurita on
Misery. Lt. McKennan saw this as a chance to help his original unit with
whom he still worked for and had many friends. Therefore, Lt. McKennan
approached Captain Henderson with a plan to split up the Terran Furies.
The plan was for their unit's StarLord class jumpship to New Aberdeen, and
their Invader class jumpship to Misery to assist the Wolf Dragoons. The
Terran Furies landed and secured a Ryuken Roku (4th) Supply Depot, and
made contact with the Wolf Dragoons. Officially the Federated Suns, could
not sanction the mission to aid the Wolf Dragoons, so an announcement was
made about the forces participating in actions against Kurita. The
announcement stated that the Terran Furies would be disbanded and that
elements of the unit that were on Misery were to be discharged from the
AFFS. Having been cast out of the AFFS, the unit would have to seek
contracts as mercenaries, unanimously they decided to head for Galatea.
Colonel Lance Faulker began preparation to take the remaining members of
the Terran Furies to Galatea. However, before their departure a ComStar
communiqué was received, informing the Misery participants, under the
command of Captain Henderson, to proceed from Misery directly to New
Avalon.
Upon arrival on New Avalon, Capt. Henderson and his group were shocked to learn that they were to be reformed as a mercenary unit and already had a contract. Thus re-named the "Etruscans Children" in 3029, they were given their first mercenary contract to garrison Great Gorge on the Periphery border. Arriving on Great Gorge in 3030, the newly arrived garrison force found itself facing hostile units from the Taurian Concordat. By April of the same year, the Taurian forces left Great Gorge and Etruscans Children made plans for a raiding mission on Amber Grove. After the raid, they returned to Davion space to fix their damaged jumpdrive. Upon arrival back into Davion territory, they were boarded and placed under arrest by the AFFS District's commanding officer, Major General Elizabeth Henders. The Etruscans Children were then taken to New Syrtis, charged with conducting unauthorized raids against a foreign sovereign state. The Etruscans Children are stripped of their AFFS equipment and mechs, and were given a choice between returning to Great Gorge for the remainder of their contract or seek a new contract elsewhere. The Unit was also fined $25 million C-Bills for destruction of facilities on Amber Grove. Messages were sent to Great Gorge for all remaining personnel and dependants to make their way to Galatea. In late 3030, they contracted a civilian Jumpship to take them to Galatea to seek a new mercenary contract. A Lyran company, Praxton Enterprises, hired Etruscans Children with the stipulation that Praxton appointed the unit’s new C.O., Major Ian MacKenzie (unknown to the members of the Etruscans Children, Ian was a member of the Kell Hounds and before that the Wolf Dragoon’s famed WolfNet). The unit began the process of rebuilding and by early 3031 they finalized negotiations with the FedCom and Tikonov Free Republic to garrison the world of Procyon. The unit was officially re-named the 1st Procyon Highland Guard and arrived on planet in June of 3031. This was not to say that the transition from the Etruscan’s Children to the 1st PHG was a smooth one, for Maj. MacKenzie and Lt. McKennan were immediately at odds with each other and untrusting of one another. Both men had intelligence backgrounds and were very suspicious of each other, this wasn’t helped by the fact that neither knew of the other’s true origins. A few weeks after their arrival on Procyon, there was a terrorist attack and the ComStar Precentor was assassinated. ComStar later cleared the 1st PHG of the assassination. Using old Star League geological surveys provided by the new ComStar Precentor, the 1st PHG discovered an unmapped island. Scouting of the island revealed a Star League Marauder half buried in the hills, further exploration yielded the amazing discovery of the lost Earthwerks production site. In mid July, Charon’s Boatmen raided Procyon and were defeated by the 1st PHG. To ransom backed his unit’s equipment, the CO of Charon’s Boatmen gave the 1st PHG information that it had concerning a Castle Brian on planet’s main continent. In quick decision, Maj. MacKenzie contacted Snord's Irregulars to assist in the search for this facility. With Rhonda Snord’s assistance, the Castle Brian was found and brought online by the end of the summer. Afterwards the 1st PHG began a lengthy refitting program, enabling all the unit's equipment to be upgraded with the Star League tech found in the Castle. Responding to several terrorist attacks on the 2nd BN base, “The Outriders”, a Special Independent Recon unit was formed to help the 1st PHG counter such actions. Maj. MacKenzie discussed with Capt. McKennan the information about several derelict SLDF Warships in the Keid system. By early the following year the 1st PHG headed to Keid system to survey the situation. When the 1st PHG Jumpship arrived at the pirate point near the SLDF Warships, they discovered members of the original Terran Furies, commanded by Col. Lance Faulker, were already there trying to perform a salvage operation themselves. Through negotiations, they traded some Star League mechs for an Essex and 2 Vincents; they also began contract negotiations for the Terran Furies to join the 1st PHG. When the 1st PHG jumped back to Procyon, the Essex mis-jumped with the Special Ops BN on board and disappeared. Surprisingly, a prototype jumpship did enter the Keid system with an incredible tale. The ship and her crew were from Clan Wolverine and had fled Clan space in October of 2823. Though their jumpship was damaged beyond repair, the crew and many of its systems were salvaged and brought to Procyon. Upon arriving at Procyon, the crew underwent intense debriefings by Maj. MacKenzie and his fledging Intel staff. The 1st PHG were immediately able to authenticate the story, and it was at this time that he decided to brief his senior staff as to the fate of General Aleksandr Kerensky’s long departed SLDF Exodus Fleet and his own origins with Clan Wolf. Though this knowledge threaten to break the trust they had of their new commanding officer, Maj. MacKenzie was eventually able to convince them of the direness of the situation. To this end, he was also able to convince the entire senior staff to support his long term goal of building a unit strong enough to resist the eventual invasion of the Clans. With so much at sake for both the 1st PHG and the entire Inner Sphere, it was decided to institute strict security measures protecting the identity and location of the Clan Wolverine members, as well as, the Castle Brian and Earthwerks production lines. To further these long reaching goals, the 1st PHG established mech, aero, armor, and infantry training programs in April of 3032. December of the same year, the excavations at the Earthwerks site were completed. In June of the following year the Earthwerks Production lines are transferred to the Castle Brian. Using equipment from the long abandoned Brigadier Corporation’s Mech production complex at Cleveburg, Durant’s "Steel Falcons", and from Procyon’s own Castle Brians, the 1st PHG was able to reopen the Earthwerks facilities in 3034. For the next 2 decades, things were peaceful for the 1st PHG. They participated in various border skirmishes and raids, they were used in line duty against Kurita in the War of 3039, Beta Regiment was contracted out to Fed-Com for various assignments. Maj. MacKenzie used the knowledge gained from the Wolverine jumpship and his knowledge of the Clans to assist in secretly upgrading the Earthwerks production line to Clan Technology levels. The 1st PHG opened its training facilities to train various mercenary units. The 1st PHG contract with various trainee units stipulate that 20% of sublet contracts would be paid to the 1st PHG. During this period, the 1st PHG grows from 1 mech regiment to nearly 4 mech regiments in size, mostly through careful negotiations with smaller mercenary units and intensive recruitment from the local population. In March of 3050 the Special Ops BN returned to the Inner Sphere with the second half of the incredible tale. They had mis-jumped aboard the SLDF Essex to the year 2840. Upon completing their jump they had found themselves a drifting derelict amidst a fleet of Clan Wolverine warships and jumpships. Capt. McKennan immediately recognized the unit and clan insignia’s on the jumpships, warships and aerospace fighters in the area as Clan Wolverine. Completely out of time and space the SLDF Essex had jumped backwards in time to the year 2840. Apparently the clan fleet and the re-activated SLDF Essex had both used the same region of space to activate their jumpdrives. Though separated by nearly 200 years, this event had caused a space-time rift allowing ships from each fleet to move through in time. Theoretically, Capt. McKennan assumed, a Clan Wolverine warship must have materialized in the Keid system in the year 3032. Upon making contact with the members of the Clan fleet, Capt. McKennan learned that Clan Wolverine were now calling themselves the Minnesota Tribe and were members of the original SLDF’s 331st Royal BattleMech Division. After fleeing Clan space they shed many of the Clans’ ways and reverted back to the SLDF structure of their ancestors. In short, the Minnesota Tribe was the 331st Royal BattleMech Division returning home to the Inner Sphere, though they were not now the same 331st that left with the Kerensky’s Exodus. Many things had happened to reshape them, but their goal was to return to the Inner Sphere and assist in rebuilding of the Star League. Capt. McKennan also learned that prior to the Trial of Annihilation, Clan Wolverine successfully completed 7 prototypes of their new Minnesota Heavy Cruiser Class warship. Two of these designs had been with Clan Wolverine’s Exodus fleet, the SDF-3 was lost in the mis-jump with the SLDF Essex, presumably to Keid circa 3032. The remaining warship, initially designated during trial runs as the Minnesota SDF-7, was still fully loaded as it was when Clan Wolverine fled from Clan Space 17 years prior. The SDF-7 was commanded by Col. Gabrielle Cavanaugh and housed 6 Horizonts, a newly designed dropship that had more in common with large trans-atmospheric shuttles, than dropships. The two forces spent many weeks going through their respective histories and debriefing each other. Capt. McKennan was shocked to learn the truth behind the Trial of Annihilation and other convenient omissions in his original clan’s Remembrance. With no ship of their own and no apparent way back home the 1st PHG Special Ops BN and the prize crew of the now derelict Essex, joined the Minnesota Tribe. Two years later while traveling to Chateau in the Lyran Commonwealth, a Minnesota Tribe jumpship had a navigation problem. The old Monolith class jumpship practically jumped into the system directly on top of the Minnesota SDF-7. Only the quick reactions of the SDF-7’s navigation officer prevented a disaster. Having detected the incoming jump signal and determining its proximity, Lt. Hallis immediately used the stored charge in the Lithium-Fusion batteries to initiate a quick in-system jump. The result was far from what Lt. Hallis expected for when they materialized in the same system, the Minnesota Tribe fleet was gone. All sensor report came back negative for contact from the Minnesota fleet. However, what startled them all was the intercepted Clan Wolf Batchall for the planet Chateau. Apparently they had jumped to March of 3050, right into the front lines of the Clan Invasion. After a brief dispute with Col. Cavanaugh, Capt. McKennan led a force to Chateau to assist the Fed-Com forces, under the command of Field Marshal Sarah Steiner. This action prompted Col. Cavanaugh to commit her Minnesota Tribe assets to assist in the fight against Clan Wolf. This was not a hard decision for Col. Cavanaugh, considering Clan Wolf’s part in the Trail of Annihilation against Clan Wolverine. After helping to cover Marshal Steiner’s retreat off-world, the members of both the Minnesota Tribe and 1st PHG’s Spec Ops BN discussed their options. Their first step was to return to Keid and try to piece together just how much has happened during their dramatic mis-jumps in time. They traveled to Keid and found the remnants of the Minnesota SDF-3 prototype. After gathering intelligence on the current status of the Inner Sphere and its recent history, they made a unanimous decision to return to Procyon to rejoin the 1st PHG under command of Col. MacKenzie. In May 3050, they arrived in the Procyon system and made contact with the 1st PHG, who were in disbelief. They were escorted to planetary orbit and submitted to genetic testing to verify their identity. After verification, they are brought to the Castle and debriefed. In the process Col. MacKenzie helps reunited members of the Minnesota Tribe who have not seen each other in nearly 30 years. The situation is hard for many members of the SDF-7 to accept, but the older crew of the SDF-3 help to convince them that Col. MacKenzie was a man whom they could trust and that the 1st PHG was a unite worthy of their support. After being in the Procyon system for two weeks the entire SDF-7 crew pledged themselves to the 1st PHG. Shocked and honored by their decision Col. MacKenzie in return pledged to help them determine the fate of all the members of the Minnesota Tribe that had been left behind them. Since the arrival of the Clans the 1st Procyon Highland Guard has undertaken many measures to prepare for its ultimate challenge. To this end the 1st PHG, has sought to strengthen its ties to the various units that it has helped train, and has begun planning for the eventual opening of its Production Lines and Castle Brian to the Fed-Com and her allies. The 1st PHG has also begun trying to coordinate efforts to bring the most elite and honorable of the Inner Sphere’s various Mercenary Units together and train them as the Wolf Dragoons’ trained the elite and nobles on the Houses of the Inner Sphere. Duke MacKenzie has also sought to use his past affiliation with the Kell Hounds and Wolf Dragoons to further this goal. |
